World Environment Day
World Environment Day, celebrated
annually on June 5th, serves as a global reminder of the importance of
environmental conservation and sustainability. As we reflect on the significance
of this day, it is essential to consider the role of humanity as stewards of
God's creation.
In the book of Genesis, we find the account of God's creation of the universe, including the Earth and all living creatures. In Genesis 1:26-28, we read,
“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our
image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the
sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and
over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His
own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill
the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds
of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Gen 1:26-28
NKJV)
This passage highlights humanity's
unique position as God's appointed stewards over the Earth and its inhabitants.
As stewards, we have been entrusted with the responsibility to wisely manage
and care for God's creation. It is not a license to exploit or dominate the
environment, but rather a call to nurture and protect it.
Recognizing our role as stewards of
the Earth should evoke a deep sense of responsibility within us. The biblical
worldview teaches us that everything in the world belongs to God, and we are
mere caretakers during our time on Earth. This understanding motivates us to
exercise responsible stewardship, ensuring that our actions align with God's
intended purpose for creation.
From the earliest pages of the Bible,
we see examples of God's concern for the natural world. In the story of Noah
and the flood, God instructed Noah to build an ark and save a remnant of every
species to preserve them from destruction. This account reveals God's intention
for humans to play an active role in preserving and conserving the Earth.
World Environment Day serves as a
powerful reminder of our role as stewards of God's creation. Let us celebrate
this day by committing ourselves to be faithful stewards, knowing that our
actions today will shape the world for generations to come.
